Float Away Anxiety - Excerpt 3
The main effect of floating is TO GET RID OF MUSCLE TENSION.
The first tensions disappear in the middle and lower back.
Much of our stress and anxiety is stored unconsciously in our muscles. It is remarkable that little research has been done on this. Studies now show that floating eliminates most muscle tension.
One study asked people where they felt the most tension in their bodies. Most of the tension was located in the neck, shoulders and back, especially around the spine where gravity plays the biggest role.
A comparative test was done between 90 minutes of floating and 90 minutes of watching relaxing TV images. The picture shows the differences before and after. After watching TV, generally more tension was noticed, even tension in the buttocks.
Remarkably, from the second float onwards, all tension disappeared in the middle and lower back. Some people still experienced tension in the neck after the first two floats, but it is to be expected that this will also disappear after three or four floats.
Conclusion: one of the most important characteristics of floating is the release of tension in the body. Not only the skeletal muscles but also the deeper muscles relax. This was measured objectively with blood pressure tests. More about the blood pressure tests in part four.
